What is Cannabis?
Cannabis is a complex plant used for its medical benefits prior to recorded history. Over the last several decades, scientists have discovered that the human body interacts with the natural compounds found in cannabis by way of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Our bodies are made up of the nervous system, circulatory system, immune system, digestive system, and more, with cells located in most of the major organs. These cells include a sophisticated network of cannabinoid receptors, including CB-1 and CB-2, and are unique in their ability to receive TCH, CBD, and CBN molecules found in cannabis
The history of cannabis goes way back to the 1800s but the realization of CB-1 and CB-2 resulted in the discovery of Anandamide. This cannabinoid-like chemical within the body interacts with the CB-1 and CB-2 receptors, moderating the central and peripheral nervous system. In other words, it has an effect on the regulation of functions within the immune system. We’ve figured out there’s a system within our bodies specifically designed to interact with the active chemical compounds of the cannabis plant.
The CB-1 receptors are concentrated in the brain, central nervous system, and throughout bodily tissues. They are mainly responsible for the psychoactive effects associated with THC. CB-2 receptors are located within the peripheral organs and cells within the immune system, with the highest concentration located in the gut. These receptors receive the CBN molecules from cannabis.

Different Methods of Cannabis Consumption
While most everyone has heard of smoking cannabis flower, there is a wide array of consumption methods that impact the experience. They can be separated into four main categories:
- Oral – This classification includes edibles, beverages, capsules and even breath strips, with the cannabinoids absorbed through the digestive tract. Effects are long-lasting with a slow onset, so it’s best to start with micro-dosing.
- Sublingual – A few drops of a tincture can be placed under the tongue to absorb cannabinoids through the blood vessels for rapid onset of effects. Swallowing any remaining liquid delivers a delayed experience.
- Inhalation – This category covers smoking and vaping. With cannabinoids such as THC entering the bloodstream by way of the lungs, the onset of effects is almost immediate.
- Topical – Lotions, balms, oils and a wide range topicals are applied to the skin, eliminating the psychoactive effects and providing localized treatment of soreness, pain, skin irritation, chapped lips and more.
